Family Partnership & Culture

Beginning at very young ages children begin to notice similarities and differences between people. Children's literature is a valuable tool to support any Anti-Bias curriculum. In this workshop we focus on how to identify picture books that positively represent diverse families and cultures to support children in developing their self identity, learning about people who are different and issues related to social justice.

In our modern society, families of young children often encounter a wide range of challenges but all families have strengths.  In this workshop we discuss common challenges, strengths and factors that support resiliency. In addition we will explore strategies for building relationships with families that recognize their strengths and enable early childhood professionals to better support them to be more resilient.

So much of our understanding of other cultures as adults is defined by the beliefs, values and experiences we were exposed to as children.  In order to create a welcoming learning environment for all children, it is critical that we self-reflect on our own culture/family. In this workshop we dedicate time recognizing our own cultures and how this may impact our interactions and relationship with young children and their families.

In this workshop we will explore the ever changing definition of a family and investigate factors that impact the members and their relationships. In addition, we will discuss the concept of "Culture" and it's relationship to "family".
